Privacy

MaeowMap helps neighbors share information about community cats. This notice explains what information the service handles and what becomes public when you contribute. Please do not post private, sensitive, or identifying information about people.

Information we handle

• Account details: when you sign in with Google, we receive and store your Google account identifier, email address, display name, and (if provided) profile image URL. You can change your MaeowMap display name.
• Things you contribute: cat spot names and descriptions, area and exact map coordinates, cat details, visiting times, feeding advice, directions, feeding notes and times, and photos. These contributions are shown publicly with your display name; feeding updates may also show your Google profile image.
• Reports: if you report a spot or update, we store the report reason, optional details, the reported item, and your account association so an administrator can review it.
• Basic technical data: our hosting and security provider may process connection and request data, such as your IP address, to deliver and protect the service.

What is public

Cat spots, their coordinates and details, photos, feeding updates, and contributor display names are available to visitors. Public information can be copied, cached, or indexed by others. Only add a location that is appropriate to share publicly. Do not identify private homes or expose sensitive places.

Location on your device

If you choose a “near me” or current-location feature, your browser asks for permission to use your device location to center the map. That temporary location is not saved by that action. Coordinates are sent to us when you submit a cat spot, because they are part of the public contribution.

Cookies and local storage

When you sign in, MaeowMap sets a secure, HTTP-only session cookie that lasts up to 30 days or until you sign out. We also save your language choice in your browser’s local storage.

Service providers

Google provides sign-in. Cloudflare hosts the site and stores its database and uploaded photos. The site also loads map tiles from OpenStreetMap tile servers, map directions from Google Maps, and page assets such as fonts and map code from Google Fonts and UNPKG. Those providers may receive technical information from your browser when it requests their services. Their own privacy notices govern their handling of that information.

How long information remains

We keep account details and contributions while they are needed to operate MaeowMap. Deleting a feeding update or removing a spot takes it out of normal public views, but the current service does not automatically erase every related database record or stored photo. Some copies may also remain in provider caches or backups for a time. Reports may be retained for moderation. Email us to request access, correction, or deletion of account information or content; we will review the request and explain any information we need to retain.

Your choices

You can sign out, edit your display name, edit your own spot or feeding update, and delete your own feeding update where those controls are available. You can also contact us about your information or report content you believe is inaccurate or inappropriate.
